  • Koi - also Goi

    • The Japanese name - "the living flowers of the water", are actually Chinese imports. Koi, a carp, comes from Central Western Asia having spread in temperate waters east and west (in the Western world you see the fish, the carp, as an emblem of the Christian religion). Colorful, mostly red, selections of the eastern carp have been cultivated for centuries in China as documented in art, literature and architecture.

About 200 years ago this fish became a marketable item for the Japan trade. The fish-farmers in Niigata Prefecture - where goldfish hatcheries already flourished - quickly picked up on this welcome addition to their stock-in -trade (kois grow large, live long and can easily be transported to the market of destination). The brightest colored fish and those with the most appealing patterns were kept to be bred and sold as pets for the rich. Now the culture focuses on 'pretty'. Koi are now being bred and traded worldwide. They arrived in this country about fifty years after the goldfish, being raised commercially in many states.

The old adage "the beauty is in the eye of the beholder" applies to the koi as well. It may be colored red, white, black, blue, gray, green, orange, brown and yellow and any combination of such. Rounded pectoral and tail fins distinguish it from the butterfly koi, which has long fins and tails-comparable to the attractiveness of the long hair of a woman. The scales may be small, large, even metallic or missing. Overall the appearance has to be harmonious. The Japanese have assigned names to many of the different color configurations.

Koi grow 20 to 30 " long. They can have a longer live span than a human being. The oldest recorded koi lived for over 200 years. These fish can hear, see and smell, which means they will recognize you by sight or sound and will eagerly learn to eat from your hand. "The jewels of the water" are here for you to clear your mind of the daily turmoil of a fast-moving world and to reunite you with nature.

We sell koi 5 inches and larger. Wholesale customers, i.e. people who build ponds and aquaria, property management companies and lake caretakers need to identify themselves to obtain wholesale prices. For wholesale orders please call ahead and we will have them ready for you. We can deliver 50 fish or more for a small fee within 100 miles of Myrtle Beach
