  • Honey and Bees

    • In the past we kept honeybees and have returned to this strenuous labor of love. Various parasites imported from abroad have killed the majority of the domesticated honeybees in many states of the eastern USA. Therefore we see the need to cultivate bees, manage their hives to continue the pollinating of flowers and fruit blossoms. We sell our local honey, which the bees collect from the native and introduced plants within 12 miles of our place of business as we move various hives to different locations at different times of the year. The honey is extracted from the wax comb and put into glass jars. Tiny particles of wax, pollen or propolis may be found in the honey. All of these are healthy components found in a beehive, having also healing properties for the human being. Some people choose to buy their honey with the "comb" which is the wax surrounding the honey, sealing the little honey chamber and shielding it from impurities.

We sell a few nukes - anglicized for nucleus, the center of a hive - for the beginning beekeeper. Our bees are naturally hybridized between Russian, carnolian, Italian, and Minnesota hygienic breeds. They are generally gentle and easy to handle.

Nukes: $75- you bring box and five frames with properly installed foundation and we put five frames with honey, bees and queen into your box. By appointment only!

  • Aqua-bac

    • Algae-control a natural product:
No chemicals, no copper-sulfate, naturally safe: no green water, no green slime, no green bubbly stuff - instead esthetically pleasing, clear waters. Beneficial for the whole pond.
Available wholesale and retail. On-site consultation by appointment.
Bacteria and enzymes do their work to keep the pond healthy.
This product is great for water-gardens, koi-ponds, farm and fishing ponds, ornamental ponds in urban areas and parks, mini-golf courses, interconnected bodies of water in residential areas, golf course ponds, fish-hatcheries, waste water treatment plants, animal water troughs, water tanks in recreational vehicles and cisterns with water for human consumption.
      Yes:
safe for all water applications: It is fish, plant and wildlife friendly and beneficial for all applicable environmental uses.

Definitely safe for drinking water of pets and farm animals. It supports the growth of the beneficial bacteria in their digestive system.

      Safe:
No harmful effect from overdosing You may mistakenly use more than the recommended rate, yet you will not overdose any system. Run-off during storms and heavy rains will not destroy the coastal estuary systems. Oyster-beds, clams and other life-forms in the marshlands and coastal waters will actually benefit from the addition of aqua-bac if arriving in these waters.

Super safe for your pocket-book: no mandatory clean-up of copper-sulfate accumulations due to EPA or DEHEC regulations.

      Other benefits:
no odor of rotting decaying algae after aquatic herbicide treatments, no burning sensation on your skin should you have to work in aqua-bac treated waters. this water feels good on your skin!!!. No unsightly green bubbly slimy accumulations. On the contrary, clean clear waters will greet you. No dangerous ammonia-spikes or unexpected oxygen crashes to kill your fish and rot your plants while you are on summer vacation in Alaska. No dyed waters.

What happens with these bacteria? It is an easy to understand natural process: The bacteria use up the superfluous nitrogen and phosphates which promotes excessive algae-growth and prevent further development of various unsightly algae by using nitrogen precipitated in rain, the seasonal loads of wind-blown pollen in lakes and ornamental ponds. The waste digester takes this a step further and consumes and converts the ugly bottom muck into biologically acceptable plant-foods thus preventing the growth of anaerobic bacteria and the odor of sulfur dioxide. If you perceive the odor of rotten eggs or the smell of a paper-mill in your pond you know disaster is pending. Your expensive water-lilies will rot and your very valuable pets, the koi may loose their lives due to lack of oxygen.

The application of the dry bacteria is easy and simple. the cost is relatively low, much cheaper than liquid formulations. We have used dry bacteria in the early nineties, when ponds and water-gardens were still an unknown feature in the southern landscape. We have tried and used most any product on the market that promises good clean water and have just about sworn to not ever try an other one. We have used it in all our waters and have - if possible - clearer, cleaner water than before. The fish are healthy and happy. Even urticularia, a rare and delicate native carnivorous water-plant, thrives in this environment. Do not expect clear water where waterfowl or fountains churn up the water. Under these conditions particulate matter stays suspended in the water-column.
1 lb Aqua-bac for the ornamental pond, treats 30000 gal $44.00

  • Important garden helpers:

    • These important garden items, non-toxic to you, your children, pets and the environment improve the health of your soil and plants:

Cottonseed meal, a natural fertilizer builds soil and promotes the growth of healthy lawns , perennials, roses, camellias and flowering shrubs applied in the general rootzone of the plants by broadcasting.

Dehydrated sea-weed contains many micronutrientns and enzymes. It encourages the growth of bigger sturdier flowers and fruit and helps the plants to cope with adverse conditions such as extremme heat- or coldspells. One application in spring and fall are generally sufficient. Beddingplants thrive and bloom much better with one application after planting.

Diatomaceaous Earth is being used to fight parasites in cattle, goats. dogs and other pets and farm animals. In the garden it controls aphids, black flies, cutworms, fleas and gnats, grubs, mosquitoes, palmetto bugs and other soft bodied gardenpests very efficiently. It can be spread via a motorized sprayer, the sprinkling system, a handsprayer , by broadcasting it on the soil or it can be dusted on fruit trees, vegetable plants, tomatoes etc. up to the day of harvest. It also prevents the survival of the South African hive-beetle if spread under and around your beehives. DE acts by dessiccating the hymolymph of the soft-bodied insects. One caveat: Plants in full bloom must not be treated with DE on their flowers to avoid damage to native pollinators, butterflies and honeybees.

      Fishemulsion
A natural fertilizer concentrate which should be applied monthly from early spring through late summer, or early fall , i.e. late February through late Septmeber for zone 8 a, late April through late August for zone 5.

      Neem Oil,
derived from the tropical neem tree is a fungicide, miticide and insecticide , triple action. It works well on all scale insects, mites and fungal attacks on plants. As a rule three applications 8 to ten days apart are necessary. It may be used up to the day of harvest. To quote our friend Shashi; "In India the people chew the bark and eat the flowers." Which means as baignets or fritters dipped in pancake mix and then fried.

      Soil Moist
A synthetic acrylic copolymer is non-toxic and safe to use in all landscape applications.
Ideal for planters and throughs, sandy poor soils and gardens where irrigation is not a choice. Integrated, mixed into the soil it retains water and releases it slowly as need arises, thus reqiring the addition of water less frequently and using less water as it is conserved in the soil-mix and not immediately leached out. It also improves the bad sandy soils over a period of time by retaining soilfines at the rootlevel of the plants.
